It can be the most intriguing thing, the way change happens. So many are seeking change in their life in some area. Many want a relationship to be better, deeper, more committed and so on. Others want to lose weight. You may want to begin your dream career. So often, we are looking for things to be different and we think that once that thing becomes reality, once change happens, once we acquire what we have been spending our energy and resources on, there will be a switch come on in our soul and we will finally feel happy, or confident, or successful. We will know we “match up.” We realize, “Yes, I make the grade.” It seems that once our ship comes in, we finally arrive and can live the desirable life we have always dreamed of without worry, fear, maybe never again experience unhappiness. Perhaps, we will go through some massive, meaningful experience and there will be this light will come on in our world. Then, we become wiser. We will be able to forgive or be sought out for our great insight into life because of our experience. There will be peace in our life, then. It’s like we hope this change will come and we look for it around every corner. We almost say to ourselves, “Everyone out there deserves a good life, so surely mine is about to arrive. And, once it does, then I will be able to become the real me. I’ll be happy. I can love again. I will lose the weight. I will quit struggling like I always do. Once the change happens, then life will get better.” We are not selfish. We realize that not everything will be perfect. We know we will still have to work for the rent money, or put in more time with our spouses to keep things going well. But, we won’t be lacking that initial spark that makes change possible. Then, all the other dominoes will fall into place.
But, change is not like that. Change is a needy infant. The desire you feel when you think about change is like when a 6 month old screams. It feels that important to us. The call is that loud. If you were to go to that infant and just stare at it, it would keep screaming. It would continue to call to you. Maybe, it would even get louder. That call you feel deep down for things to be different is telling you something. Just like the infant, if you merely look at the call it will become consuming maybe even very loud. It needs something that change always needs… Nourishment. No infant child screams for absolutely no reason. Neither does change. Change requires nourishing sustenance.
What is the change you desire? Pinpoint your dream outcome. That will remain a fantasy if you do not take action. The way change works is it matches pace with you and it only moves after you move. If you want to be successful financially and feel at rest there are certain action steps you need to take. Even on the days when your heart is not in it, you’re not motivated, you can think of better things to do, etc… If you continue to sock away money in your retirement plan or save the amount you need you will get the desired outcome. You will eventually save enough to retire on or you will finally have your money outlast your month. The result you get will be the feeling and reality that you have won with money and are successful. But, it only happens after you move. Other life changes are no different.
The mechanics of change are this: Take action, then you will feel more motivated by the successful results your action creates. Motivation is perpetuated, actions continue, circumstances change and you meet your new reality. Plan your work today and begin working your plan consistently. As Dr. Suess says, “Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way.”
